Surfboard Leash

Surfboard Leash

Also called a legrope, a surfboard leash comes in handy for two main reasons; firstly it means you don't have to swim after your board every time it's swept away by a surfing wipeout; and it stops your board from potentially hitting other surfers which can cause injury and be potentially very dangerous.

The leash is usually made from a urethane cord with a sewn loop at one end or a velcro strap.

Beginners should never hit the surf without a surfboard leash-Once you realise how easy it is for your board to get away from you, you'll be thankful you took that advice.

So what do you need to be careful of when using a leash?

* The leash getting tangled on your feet.
* The leash pulling the board back quickly in the surf and causing the board to hit you in the head (it happens).

While you can get a little tangled using a leash, and for pro surfers it's more a matter of preference than necessity to use one, surfboard leashes can help you stay connected to your board. However, if you feel for whatever reason that it's inhibiting your surfing experience, you're probably best to surf without one.

Knowing when to stay connected to the leash and when to let go is important to ensure your always surf safely and get the most out of your surfing experience.

"As for my own surfing, let's just say that when the waves start pushing 10 feet, I get this tremendous urge to make a sandwich."
