Backside Bottom Turn

Backside Bottom Turn

The Bottom Turn, whether performed frontside or backside is one of the most important surfing maneuvers to learn as you'll be doing them often as your performance improves and you want to progress to other tricks and more advanced surfing maneuvers.

The Bottom Turn is all about speed, weight transference and timing. Here, we will talk specifically about performing a Backside Bottom Turn. Keep in mind that like with all surfing maneuvers, the backside version will always be just a little bit more challenging than the frontside.

Performing a Backside Bottom Turn:

* Maximum speed
* The right timing
* The correct weight distribution- so you can keep riding at maximum speed without falling off

Performing a Backside Bottom Turn:

1. Firstly you need to paddle out and catch a wave.
2. Once you're on your feet, ride down the face of the wave getting as much speed as you can.
3. Once you reach the flats (the bottom section of the wave), put pressure on the inside rail and rear foot and make sure your knees are bent.
4. Use your arms to balance as you turn and move your body towards the lip of the wave so you can see where you are heading.
5. 5. Then, put your weight on your back foot to gain speed as you head towards the face of the wave.

The Backside Bottom Turn is a little more tricky than the Frontside Bottom Turn, so start with the frontside first, and then move on to the backside. You'll be amazed at just how quickly you'll be able to progress to more advance maneuvers once you are able to master the Bottom Turn.
